Jon Stewart: ‘Strange’ Obama’s Approval Rating Is Not Lower

June 16, 2011

WASHINGTON, June 16 ( – Comedian Jon Stewart, the host of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” says it is “strange” that President Barack Obama does not have a lower approval rating.

Stewart was asked why he thinks President Obama’s approval rating has gone below 50 percent.

“Wow, I didn’t know it was up around 50 percent. He’s doing better than I thought. I didn’t realize, really? 50 percent? Pretty good,” he said before performing on Thursday night at the Bob Woodruff Foundation’s “Stand Up For Heroes” gala dedicated to military personnel.

“I didn’t realize he was even up close to there so that’s not so shabby. What do you think it is like 48, 49? Pretty close. Strange. I wouldn’t think so. You figure if the unemployment rate’s around 52 percent – yeah, it’s just strange.”

Stewart also rejected the notion that young people rely on the “The Daily Show” for their political news.

“That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” he said.
